Essential Oils And Their Uses
Essential oils are the pure essence extracted from plants. It is the concentrated form of the plant from the leaves, stems, or flowers. The oils are extracted from the plants using a variety of methods but some of the most popular include steam distillation, water distillation, or expeller pressed. Because the oils are concentrated, a little but goes a long way. Essential oils are used for therapeutic and medicinal uses and are also used as a basis for fragrances. This makes them excellent choices for aromatherapy.
Some common essential oils and their uses include:
- Lavender essential oil. Known for its calming effects, lavender oil is used for calming nerves and soothing sore muscles.
- Tea Tree essential oil. The essential oil from the tea tree plant has known antifungal qualities and is used to treat fungal infections.
- Lemon essential oil. Lemon oil is an astringent and detoxifying agent and is therefore great for cleaning oily skin. It is also a good sanitizer.
- Ylang Ylang essential oil. This oil is also a calming oil but is also considered an aphrodisiac and is used to help relieve nervous tension, depression, insomnia and to treat frigidity, and impotence.
- Patchouli essential oil. This essential oil, derived from the patchouli flower, has antiviral qualities and has been used to treat nausea, headaches, colds, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
These are just some of the hundreds of essential oils that are available. These oils can be used to treat ailments or used as aromatherapy. Another use is as a massage oil. Massage essential oil, used with a carrier oil base with an essential oil added to it, can help soothe and heal tired muscles. Also, many pure essential oils can be mixed with others to create a blend. These blends can combine the beneficial properties of several different oils in one.
