Ylang Ylang Essential Oil And Its Many Uses
If you suffer from anxiety, depression or a lack of libido, then ylang-ylang essential oil may help you with these ailments. This oil has known antidepressant, anti-anxiety, and aphrodisiac qualities. It can be used is an essential oil diffuser, as an additive to a bath, in a cream or lotion, or even in a massage essential oil blend. Ylang ylang means “flower of flowers” as the essential oil has a flowery and sweet aroma. It is distilled from the flowers of the ylang-ylang tree (Cananga Odorata) which grows in Indonesia, specifically Sumatra, Java, and Madagascar.
Extraction of Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
The essential oil is extracted from the large, tender, fragrant pink, mauve or yellow flowers by water or steam distillation. The first distillation is the top-grade oil from the ylang ylang flowers. This is known as the “extra” grade oil. The flowers are distilled multiple times. These are called the first, second, and third pressings. The extra grade essential oil is typically not used for aromatherapy but is used in perfume where the purest and cleanest aroma is needed. The extra grade is usually mixed with first, second, or third grade oil to create an aromatherapy oil.

Uses for Ylang Ylang Essential Oil Since the oil has a calming effect on the nerves, it is an excellent tonic for stress and anxiety. It also has a euphoric effect so it can be used to help treat depression. And because of these qualities, it is also used as an aphrodisiac to treat impotence and frigidity. When used on the skin, it can help balance out the oils in the skin; it can moisturize dry areas of skin, while drying out oily areas by balancing the secretion of sebum. And for many years it has been used on the scalp to stimulate thick and shiny hair. |
